E3 2011: Mass Effect 3 Video Preview
I think it's pretty safe to say that there's a lot of curiosity about Kinect Star Wars.
At Microsoft's showcase, it was the longest line I stood in and
therefore the game that I felt most prepared to play because I'd watched
so many others go through the motions in a cooperative combat-focused
mission.
It was interesting to see the range of newbies to pros. The newbies
would flail around, making as many lightsaber movements as possible.
Unfortunately, most of them forgot that you need to step and lean
forward in order to zoom into range on enemies. In fact, that's probably
the most awkward part about Kinect Star Wars. Despite being on rails,
the game never places you within lightsaber-range of an enemy, so you'll
have to lurch forward to hit anything (unless you focus on using the
Force).
Wielding a lightsaber is fun, but currently the Force is laggy. When you
use the Force throw (by moving your left hand back and then pushing it
forward) or Force lift (by holding up your left hand, hovering over the
enemy and then flinging it away) it can take a while to register, and by
that time, you're either frustrated or your partner killed them. This
isn't too disconcerting at this point because the game still has time to
fix that. Other movements like hopping up (which makes your character
perform a fancy flip-jump) and leaning to the side (which results in an
awesome aerial dodge) work quite well.
Now, there were people who were extremely confident in their Jedi
abilities, and they were far more convincing when they played. They took
solid steps forward, elegantly wielded their lightsabers and remembered
to use the Force.
Unfortunately, most people will not look like that when they play this
game. Of course, when it was my turn up to bat with 1UP Community Manger
Tina Sanchez, we kicked some serious robot ass. Not that I'm bragging
or anything.
I'll need to see more of Kinect Star Wars before I'm fully sold. I had a
good time, but I would like it to be more responsive. What will make or
break this game though is the storyline, which will be unveiled at a
later date.
